Covid related delays

Posted by Mark Spaulding on

Covid 19

As you are no doubt aware, the Omicron variant of Covid19 is circulating in our region. At present we have a number of staff away due to either illness or testing related isolation requirements. Please bear with us and our suppliers over the coming weeks and months as we expect many delays in all levels of the supply chain. Coupled with weather delays we encourage all of our customers to please factor in additional time delays on their construction projects and be patient when dealing with people.

Thankyou for your understand.

USG Boral Supply update

Posted by Mark Spaulding on

Over the last month there have been a number of of issues with supply of USG Boral Plasterboard.
The latest letter issued below from USG Boral's managing director explains the current situation.

Whilst plasterboard is starting to arrive in FNQ there is still a major back-log of orders for all of Queensland. Unfortunately that means limited allocations. Until we can get on top of those back-orders this means we are still having to delay deliveries until we can get stock. We hope that the situation will ease over the coming weeks. We will endeavour to keep you up to date as best we can. If you have any specific questions please call our team in the office.

Dec 03, 2021

I am pleased to be able to inform you that each of our three plants – Camellia, Pinkenba and Port Melbourne – are now operational.

We are now focused on the production of our most popular SKUs across our standard plasterboard range so that we can build up stock as quickly as possible.

With respect to our fire-rated plasterboard, we have begun production trials involving a new formulation of key raw materials. A rigorous certification process is required in relation to the production of fire-rated systems, and we are working with an independent agency to ensure that all the necessary requirements are satisfied. Subject to satisfactory test results, we currently anticipate being able to supply the new range of fire-rated plasterboard products in March 2022. We will provide you with further updates about this as we progress the trials.

We appreciate the timeframe for the supply of the new range of fire-rated plasterboard products may be problematic for some customers, but we must complete the certification process as required by the National Construction Code. To address this supply time frame, we are in advanced discussions with other manufacturers in relation to the possible bulk purchase of fire-rated plasterboard that we can then supply to you during this transition period. We will provide further information about this at the earliest opportunity.

We are confident that we will emerge from this period of disruption with a range of products that set the standard for quality across the industry, and that our products will support your business well into the future.

Regards,

Tony Charnock

USG Boral Supply Issues

Posted by Mark Spaulding on

Over the last couple of weeks we have had a number of issues with supply of USG Boral Plasterboard.
The letters issued below from USG Boral's managing director explain the current situation.

Whilst we had hoped our stock levels would see us through these couple of weeks we have now reached a point where supply is critical and we are having to delay deliveries of large sheets as we are out of stock. We hope that early next week the situation will be resolved but will endeavour to keep you up to date as best we can.

Oct 27, 2021

I am writing to inform you about the supply of certain plasterboard products from our national network.

Last Friday we temporarily closed our Pinkenba plant in Queensland whilst we removed Chinese-sourced vermiculite and made arrangements for a deep clean by independent occupational hygienists. At this stage we anticipate that the site may be closed for up to two weeks. We will provide an update regarding re-opening the site once we receive further information from the occupational hygienists.

On a positive note, our Port Melbourne plant in Victoria recommenced operations yesterday after independent occupational hygienists completed a deep clean and removal of the vermiculite over the last week.

Our Camellia plant in Sydney is also undergoing a deep clean. We expect that the cleaning will be finished and that operations can resume later this week.

There may be some impacts on the availability of some of our products in the coming weeks but we look forward to re-opening all of our sites and supplying all our products to customers as soon as we can do so.

We reiterate that testing of our fire-resistant plasterboard at all three of our Australian manufacturing facilities has been carried out and we can report with confidence that they are safe for use.

We are transitioning to another source of vermiculite which is used extensively by our parent company, the Knauf Group, and by other suppliers of plasterboard around the world.

On behalf of USG Boral, I thank you again for your patience in relation to the disruption caused by events of the past few weeks.

Thank you for your continuing support during this difficult period.

UPDATED NOTE TO CUSTOMERS FROM MANAGING DIRECTOR

I am writing to inform you that we have concluded the testing of our fire-resistant plasterboard products at all three of our Australian manufacturing facilities, and that I can report with confidence that no asbestos has been detected in any of our products.

I had previously informed you that we have been conducting ongoing investigations arising from the detection of small traces of contamination in vermiculite supplied to USG Boral’s Camellia site in New South Wales. Vermiculite is used in the manufacture of our fire-resistant plasterboard products.

Over the past week we have engaged with specialists to identify an appropriate sampling regime across the stocks of the fire-resistant plasterboard in our manufacturing facilities. This involved expert testing across a range of manufacture batch dates for:

  • Firestop® Plasterboard
  • Fire Wetstop™ Plasterboard
  • Multistop™ Plasterboard range (3/3HI, 4/4HI, 5/5HI)
  • Shaftliner™ Mould Stop Plasterboard

Numerous builders in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales have also undertaken their own testing of our fire-resistant plasterboard, and these too have consistently returned clear results with no asbestos detected.

Given the test results now available to us, we can confirm that our products have no asbestos contamination and are safe for use.

These products include:

  • Firestop® Plasterboard
  • Fire Wetstop™ Plasterboard
  • Multistop™ Plasterboard range (3/3HI, 4/4HI, 5/5HI)
  • Shaftliner™ Mould Stop Plasterboard

While the test results now available to us show no asbestos contamination, we initially took the difficult but correct decision to treat the situation with the utmost seriousness, including asking our customers not to sell or distribute our fire-resistant plasterboard products while testing was undertaken. We invoked this precautionary approach because we place the highest priority on the health and safety of our workers and customers.

Our actions were in line with our commitment to the health, safety and wellbeing of our customers, employees and the broader community.

We are transitioning to another source of vermiculite which is used extensively by our parent company, the Knauf Group, and by other suppliers of plasterboard around the world.

Thank you again for your patience and support during this difficult period.

Price increases and product shortages

Posted by Mark Spaulding on

Cost increases

What an interesting financial year this last year has been! Who would have predicted last year that in 12 months we'd be facing labour & product shortages.

As you may have heard the construction industry is running at capacity, partly due to covid related shutdowns, partly due to government stimulous creating additional housing demand and partly due to general market (local and international) hype or FOMO (fear of missing out). In the last 6 months alone we've seen a record number of cost increases and product shortages. The instability in global timber and steel prices has meant quoting projects accurately 3-6 months in advance is very challenging.

We are aware this has caught out a number of builders & projects who ultimately get stung with the final cost increase and no one to pass it on to. With regular communication around these changes we can hopefully all avoid that scenario.

At PMC we try to be as transparent as possible and provide you with as much notice around product changes. Our price variations page (https://www.pmcstore.net.au/pages/price-variations) shows a list of increases that we are aware of. Some of these increases (like steel framing in Sep 2021) are significant - around 20%. Most of this is linked to the cost of iron ore, however some is also attributed to a shortage in liquid oxygen which is used in the manufacturing process. At this time we unfortunately cannot hold pricing longer than the quoted 30 days. We will of course endeavour to keep you up to date as much as possible via our socials and web page.

In addition to price increases and product shortages one of our major suppliers of fibre cement sheeting (James Hardie) is consolidating their product offering - partly to keep up with market demand. Unfortunately for the North Queensland market this will mean significant changes to the way we currently work.

Townsville store closure

Posted by Mark Spaulding on

Townsville Closure

Dear Customer,

As we come towards the end of a challenging year it is with great sadness that we need to inform you of some important changes at the PMC Townsville branch.

For some years now, Townsville, Mackay and the North Queensland construction industry has been struggling through some challenging times. Over the last 20 years we’ve seen a number of ‘boom and bust’ periods come and go however we think it is fair to say the last few years have proven exceptionally difficult for everyone.

Whilst we have made a number of changes at our Townsville branch to accommodate increasing competition these changes have still not been enough to meet the declining market conditions.

Unfortunately, as of January 2021 we will be closing the store at 350 Bayswater Rd, Garbutt.

The Townsville store will continue to trade up to the 23rd of December 2020 and fulfill any orders and service all requests up to that point.

If you have any questions regarding what this means for you and your business please contact either Mark or Ted Spaulding on (07) 40311277.  All of our existing contact details will continue to work for the immediate future.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to you and your business.

We thank you for your custom over the years and wish you all the best in 2021.

Yours Sincerely,

Ted Spaulding

James Hardie Best Practice

Posted by Mark Spaulding on

James Hardie Best Practice

Safety is important to us here at PMC and we take your safety very seriously! Did you know that the rules around working with Silica have recently changed?

“What is Silica and how does it affect me?” I hear you ask.

Silica is the second most common mineral on earth, and is found in many building products. James Hardie products contain sand, a source of respirable crystalline silica. Damage to lungs can be caused by prolonged or repeated inhalation. Intact sheets or products pose no known threat, but the hazard arises from the respirable crystalline silica present in dust generated by activities such as cutting, rebating, drilling, routing, sawing, crushing, or otherwise abrading fibre cement, and when cleaning up, disposing of or moving dust.

When undertaking any of these activities, it is important to follow James Hardie’s recommendations and best practice guidelines. Working safely with fibre cement products means minimizing the risks of exposure. This can be achieved by adopting the best practice, including use of appropriate tools for the job and an awareness of the hazards involved.

James Hardie encourages you to always minimise dust exposure. Therefore, when sanding, rebating, cutting, drilling or carrying out other machining of fibre cement products, as well as following the recommended cutting instructions, you should always wear a properly fitted P1 or P2 respirator and warn others in the immediate area. If you are cutting indoors, make sure that you only use a score and snap, hand guillotine or fibreshears (manual, electric or pneumatic).

When cutting outdoors, set up your station so that the wind will blow dust away from yourself or others working in the area. It is recommended to use the Villaboard Knife, Hand guillotine or fibreshears, but if you are using an electric saw, use a dust reducing circular saw fitted with a HardieBlade and connected to an M Class vacuum. Never use a power saw indoors and only use a saw or grinder with appropriate respiratory protection.

Always follow manufacturer’s safety recommendations and if you would like more information on best practice and how to work safely with James Hardie products, this can be found in their installation instructions and technical specifications available at James Hardie (www.jameshardie.com.au). It is also a good idea to obtain and read a copy of the fibre cement SDS before commencing work with this product.

Responsibility intrinsically linked with every product you choose.

Posted by Mark Spaulding on

As independent supplier of wall & ceiling building products, we have two fundamental methods of engaging our customers:

1. Source and or supply exactly what you request.

2. Work with our clients to supply products that best adhere to project specifications, designs or budgets.

To ensure our transparency, for both methods, the ownness is on the customer to acknowledge that ultimately the product choice, is always your choice! Our team can provide advice to the best of our abilities, but this is not a representation or guarantee around the suitability, quality or performance of products. Any product information provided is obtained directly from the manufacturer and supplied in good faith without any liability or responsibility on the part of Plaster / Metal / Cladding (PMC) as the Seller.

We empathise with the increasing complexities faced by our customers and the wider industry and will do our very best to provide a supporting role. However, we are not builders, carpenters, plasterers, interior designers, architects, electricians, plumbers, engineers etc. We specialise in sourcing, shipping, timing and logistics. Due to our extensive local history in the marketplace, we are more than happy to discuss your project requirements to identify products for your specific needs, but this does not relinquish you of your responsibility to ensure the product you use in your construction project is indeed fit for purpose.

At the end of the day, you need to follow all of the manufacturer’s guidelines, in order to avoid issues and cover yourself if product failure occurs. In our terms and conditions we state that the “Buyer acknowledges that it has not relied upon or been induced by any representation by the Seller and has carried out independent research to satisfy its own knowledge, that the products are indeed fit for purpose and meet all the relevant regulatory requirements for their state or territory.” What this means is that we cannot/will not advise you on how to construct your project or try and coerce you into using one of our products instead of something else. We’re happy to supply you with whatever you need and to help you understand the capabilities and limitations of the products we sell, however we don’t manufacture the products so ultimately we’re not able to advise outside of the intended purpose & guidelines that the manufacturers state.

As professionals in your own area, you assume accountability (and liability) that you have sufficiently conducted your own research into each and every product you use. Constantly having to update yourself with the latest manufacturers’ guidelines and current standards & regulations can be a pain, we get it. However, this is the new reality the entire industry is heading towards and explaining that you “didn’t know” or “someone told you” can end up with dire consequences.

Our teams in Townsville & Cairns are here help in any way we can, but we need to have this honest conversation that our company is a supplier and distributor of wall & ceiling building products; we are not builders, engineers, designers or surveyors. If you have any questions about this topic, feel free to contact our team.

Project-based quoting provides price and delivery surety

Posted by Mark Spaulding on

Whilst many people dislike it, an essential component of securing supply and price surety in the construction industry is in fact project-based quoting.

Project based pricing:

• Is reflective of quantities involved in the project

• Factors in storage/ freight requirements, timelines, and other needs of the project

• States the price, terms and conditions clearly

• Provides security to you as a buyer, which enables you to provide cost and time certainty to your clients

• Help you structure your pricing and the services you offer

• Encourage transparency between all parties

We often receive calls from customers seeking individual price estimates on products. While we are happy to meet your requests, we want to stress that estimations or ‘price checking’, as opposed to project-based quoting, does not reflect our best price offer or provide delivery certainty when it comes time to mobilise your project.

Usually a fixed term offer, ie a quote, gives us the opportunity to:

• Study your project needs carefully

• Guide you through pricing, logistics and material requirements in detail

• Calculate the best price and delivery package that suits your needs and guarantees price and supply

We understand that in our competitive landscape, project particulars are commercially sensitive, and you may not feel comfortable sharing too much detail for us to offer the best package to meet your needs. At PMC, your success is our success. All quotes and project discussions with PMC are confidential but encouraged so that you have the best deal that guarantees price and supply – every time.

Bang Media chooses Autex Quietspace

Posted by Mark Spaulding on

When Angelo from Bang Media came to us looking for an easy to install/effective acoustic solution, we quickly walked him through a wide range options from different manufacturers and settled on Autex Quietspace 25mm & 50mm nude white panels.

Here is what Angelo has to say about the effectiveness of the product:

“After building our office I noticed that the main office area had quite a bit of echo, to the point that it sounded like we were in a bathroom when talking on the phone. We tried adding a rug and various other solutions but what made the most dramatic difference was installing some Quietspace 25mm & 50mm ‘Nude’ white acoustic panels on our ceiling. Not only did this dramatically improve the quality of our phone calls but it made our main office a lot more pleasant on the ears when multiple people are talking at once. We now have these panels across our entire workspace. Highly recommended”

Quietspace panels have been engineered to absorb a minimum of 85% of the sound energy it meets. This means annoying and distracting noise no longer feels that way. Intentionally designed in three of the most common interior colours; black, grey and white, Quietspace panel can easily blend into ceilings and walls to simply do its job.

On a different note, if you run a business based in Far North Queensland and you are looking for a Creative Marketing Agency that excel at storytelling, creativity, technology & big ideas.. reach out to Angelo and his awesome Bang Media team.
